In choosing the dates for your ski vacation, it is helpful to know the climatic conditions of our area. The early season (beginning of December through mid-January) offers variable snow conditions. The daylight hours are shorter but the snow is generally drier. Mid-winter conditions prevail from mid-January through the end of February. During this time the temperatures are at their lowest but the snow is generally powder and the ski conditions can be superior. The advantages to late season (March) skiing are that you have more daylight hours and the temperatures are milder. The snow can be wetter and a bit slower but this can be a perfect time to try those more challenging trails. The altitudes of our trails affect the snow conditions as well. The Village trails wind around at 750' - 1000' and our higher altitude areas with trails for beginner, intermediates and experts wind over ridges and connect to the high peak areas of the White Mountains. The ski conditions frequently vary from one section of our trails to another. The ski conditions board located in the Foundation's information office is up-dated throughout the day. There are fine ski areas close by Jackson's trails; Wildcat and Black Mountains are connected with the cross country ski trail system, with Attitash and Mt. Cranmore just down the road. RESTAURANTS AND WINTER AMENITIES Jackson has many fine restaurants. Most are on the trails and others are close by. Finding a really good meal is not a problem. Sleigh rides, ice skating, shopping, galleries, indoor swimming pools, saunas, hot tubs, pastry and coffee shops are all available in Jackson. Information about the amenities is available by dialing 1-800-866-3334. GEARING UP TO SKI (clothing, equipment and readiness) Dressing for cross country skiing isn't difficult. The key to comfort is layering. Non-restrictive clothing including polypropylene long underwear, t-neck, warm sweater, then a wind-proof layer seems to be the most adaptable and comfortable arrangement. Jeans are not the ultimate wear for our sport. Wool, not cotton, socks are also most suitable for maximum comfort. Downhill, snowmobile suits, and other heavily insulated clothing are far too warm, especially for beginning skiers. Consult with the Nordic Skier Shop in the Touring Center building in the middle of the village if you have questions. They carry a full line of excellent clothing and accessories as well as skis, boots. The Foundation offers a range of cross-country lessons for all levels and rents ski equipment by the day or week. . In preparing to ski our trails on your vacation, remember that gentle stretching is important to prepare your muscles for comfortable exercise and take frequent breaks to look at the scenery to pace yourself on your first day skiing.
